The Island of Sea Women

Lisa See, 2019

The book is set on the island of JeJu, Korea and follows two girls from different backgrounds as they work in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective.  Their relationship covers the years from Japanese colonialism in the 1930’s and ‘40’s, World War II, the Korean War up to the era of cell phones. Their friendship is tested during difficult times.  It is a fascinating look at life in a female dominated society where women work and men watch the children.
