People of the Book

Geraldine Brooks, 2008

This is a fictionalized history of an actual book, the Hebrew codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah, an extremely precious illuminated manuscript originally from medievel Spain. An Australian book conservator is called to restore the famous Haggadah. The condition of the manuscript leads her on a search for answers to the Haggadah's past. Brooks takes the reader on a journey backward in time, to periods of major religious strife and persecution, from the 1940 German occupation of Yugoslavia, 1894 Vienna, 1609 Venice, 1492 Barcelona, and, finally, to 1480 Seville.
