The Girl from Foreign

Sadia Shepard, 2008

Shepard's parents, a Muslim Pakistani and a Christian American, gave her the freedom to embrace both religions and cultures. At age 13, she discovered that her maternal grandmother was once a member of the Bene Israel, a small Jewish community near the Konkan coast of India. As an adult, she returns to India to document her history and that of the Bene Israel, whose descendants believe they are a lost tribe of Israel. This is an engaging memoir of discovery.
