Mudbound

Hillary Jordan, 2008

Set in the Mississippi Delta, at the end of World War II, a cultivated Southern woman marries and then must adjust to life in the rural South, when her engineer husband turns to farming, his first love. Not only must she endure material deprivation, but she views firsthand the horrors of racism. The book won the 2006 Bellwether Prize for literature and social responsibility.
